In your own vehicle or a rented one:
Right from our apartment in Sector 108, Noida, to the doorstep of Katies Abode, Hartola it is 334 kms. Many people complete the journey in 6 and half hours, but frankly I take about 7 and half to eight hours. This is predominantly because we drive at a pretty leisurely pace, not to upset our pet, Katie, who has motion sickness. Plus there are many routes to reach Hartola, the shortest being the Rampur-Rudrapur highway.
If you take the bus:
There are buses that ply between Delhi’s ISBT and Kathgodam almost every hour in the day. Some are AC and others are not. A couple of Volvo buses also operate in the route which are very comfortable.
- NDLS KGM Shatabdi is the fastest among the trains running between Delhi and Kathgodam. It departs from New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) at 6:20 am and arrives at Kathgodam Railway Station at 11:40 am. In my opinion this is the best option if you are travelling to Hartola by train.
- Ranikhet Express departs at 8 pm from Delhi Cantt. Railway Station and goes via Old Delhi Railway Station and arrives at Kathgodam Railway Station at 5:05 am the next day. I used to take this train when I had to leave on Friday evening after office. Taking this train means I get the entire Saturday in the mountains.
- There is also an UTR Sampark Kranti Express which runs between Delhi and Kathgodam. It departs from Old Delhi Railway Station at 4 pm and arrives at Kathgodam at 10:45 pm the same day. Take this train only if you have decided on a night halt in Kathgodam or Haldwani. It is highly improbable that you will get a cab taking you to Hartola at 10.45 pm in the night.
The nearest airport is Pantnagar which is about 100 kms from Hartola and takes about four hours from the airport to our house. The flight from Delhi takes approximately an hour. Not a very good option unless you really have to.
Travelling from Kathgodam to Hartola:
The distance from Kathgodam to Hartola is approximately 60 kilometers and takes about two and half hours to complete. There are cabs readily available in the railway station and also at ISBT, but you will need to do a little bargaining. A small vehicle usually charges between Rs 1500 to 1700.
