Explore nature with guided hikes in Hartola from Katie’s Abode

One of the experiences I always recommend to guests at Katie’s Abode in Hartola is the guided nature hikes in and around our village. Based on your comfortability, these hikes span from half an hour to a three-hour journey into the heart of the forest, and it’s the perfect way to soak in the natural beauty that surrounds us here in the mountains.

Whether you are an early riser or prefer the soft golden light of evening, the hikes are best enjoyed during those cooler, quieter hours of the day. Many of our guests have come back raving about the peaceful forest trails, the vibrant wildflowers, and the rare bird sightings that seem to magically appear with a bit of patience and a good guide.

The hike includes a charming little picnic in the wild—simple, rustic, and incredibly refreshing. You’ll also get to explore unique trails that most visitors never find on their own, and if bird watching is your thing, you’re in for a real treat. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and make it easy for even first-time nature lovers to spot and appreciate the local flora and fauna.

That said, if you’re looking for a more self-guided experience, Hartola also has two lovely temple hikes that many of our guests enjoy. The first temple is right at the beginning of the village, and if you head out early in the morning, the trail gives you the most breathtaking sunrise views over the valley. It’s a gentle walk and perfect to start your day with some quiet reflection.

The second temple sits on top of the mountain directly opposite Katie’s Abode. The hike up there is gentle too and it’s well worth the effort. The panoramic views from the top are incredible—especially during sunset. Watching the sky change color from that height is something you won’t forget anytime soon.

Whether you choose a guided forest hike or one of the temple trails, these walks are a beautiful way to experience the landscape and spirit of Hartola.

Now if you plan on joining, I recommend packing a few essentials: comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses, a camera or binoculars if you have them, and of course, a water bottle from our homestay. The trails are gentle but varied, and you will want to be prepared to stop, observe, and take in the surroundings at your own pace.

There are also custom options available—private or group hikes, sunset treks, or even guided photography tours. And if you’re here with friends or staying for a while, ask about group rates and special offers. It’s a lovely way to spend a morning or evening, and I’ve seen it become the highlight of many guests’ stays.

I truly hope you will make time for this during your visit. It’s an experience that captures the spirit of these mountains—quiet, alive, and unforgettable. After all what’s the use if you are staying in an Uttarakhand homestay and not exploring the wonders of nature.
