A Moment of Pride: Participating in Uttarakhand’s 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

For over a year now, ever since we received our voter cards, anticipation had been building up for this very day. Having chosen Hartola as our home for our later years, it felt only natural to engage in the democratic process by electing our representative from this serene hillside community.

Uttarakhand was among the states scheduled for the first phase of the seven-phase Lok Sabha Elections in 2024, and the day finally arrived for us to exercise our voting rights in this picturesque state. Despite being in Cherrapunji (Sohra) when the election dates were announced, we promptly wrapped up our social commitments in Assam and returned to Noida, then onward to Hartola, eager to fulfill our civic duty.

Having resided in Hartola for quite some time, we were well aware of the longstanding issues that needed attention in our community. Armed with this knowledge, we were prepared to make an informed decision at the polls as to whom we should cast our vote.

On the day of the election, filled with excitement, I was up and ready by 7 am, reminiscent of the seriousness with which our parents had instilled in us the importance of voting since childhood. It felt almost like a pilgrimage, carrying on their tradition.

Arriving at the polling booth was a delightful experience. There was no rush, and to our surprise, one of the CRPF personnel overseeing the booth was from Silchar, Assam—a reminder of the interconnectedness of our vast country. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, we swiftly cast our votes, grateful for the seamless functioning of the polling process, from the courteous staff to the efficient EVM machines.

With the indelible ink on our index fingers serving as tangible evidence of our participation in this electoral exercise, we returned home with a sense of satisfaction, hopeful that the most deserving candidate would emerge victorious. The outcome on June 4 would reveal which political party or coalition would be entrusted with steering the nation forward.

This moment, being part of Uttarakhand’s democratic process, fills us with immense pride and a sense of responsibility towards our community and country.
